Alleghany County, Virginia is a county of the United States of Virginia. The population of the county was 12926 as per the 2000 census data. The July 2008 population estimate is 16202, making it the 90th most populous county in Virginia. Its area is just over 445.67 sq mi (1154.28 square kilometre), of which, 444.63 square miles (1151.59 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.04 square miles (2.69 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 40th largest by size in Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12926 people in the county, organized into 5149 households, and 3868 families residing in the county. The population density was 29.1 people per square mile (11.24/kmē), it would be the 11th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 5812 housing units at an average density of 13.1 per square mile (5.06/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.46 persons, and the average family size was 2.85 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 22.8% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 28.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.3 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 16202, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 92.62% White, 5.83% Black or African American, 0.19% American Indian, 0.34% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1.01% from two or more races.
