Alleghany County, North Carolina is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 10677 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 10951, giving it the seventh smallest population among North Carolina's county. The county spans an area of 235.52 sq mi (609.99 kmē), of which, 234.65 square miles (607.74 kmē) of it is land and 0.87 square miles (2.25 kmē) of it is water, it is the fourth smallest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 45.5 people per square mile (17.57/kmē), it would be the 15th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. There were 6412 housing units at an average density of 27.3 per square mile (10.54/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.28 persons, and the average family size was 2.75 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 19.4% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.5 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 10951, The racial makeup of the county was 10620 White, 182 Black or African American, 29 American Indian, 22 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 97 from two or more races.
