Allegany County is a United States county located in the United States of New York. In 2000, the population was 49927. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 49649, It is the 14th smallest in terms of population. The county has a total area of 1034.42 sq mi (2679.14 square kilometre), of which, 1030.22 square miles (2668.26 square kilometre) of it is land and 4.2 square miles (10.88 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 21st largest by total area in New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 49927 people in the county, organized into 18009 households, and 12189 families living in the county. The population density was 48.5 people per square mile (18.73/kmē), it is the eighth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of New York. There were 24505 housing units at an average density of 23.8 per square mile (9.19/kmē). The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.04. In the county Age distribution was 24.4% under the age of 18, 15.5% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.1 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 49649, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 96.54% White, 1.09% Black or African American, 0.33% American Indian, 1.07% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.96% from two or more races.
