Allegany County is a United States county located in the United States of Maryland. The population of the county was 74930 as per the 2000 census data. Its population was estimated at 72238 in July 2008, giving it the 16th largest population among Maryland's county. The county comprises an area of 429.82 square miles (1113.23 kmē), of which, 425.42 square miles (1101.83 kmē) of it is land and 4.4 square miles (11.4 kmē) of it is water, making it Maryland's 17th largest county by total area.

In the county Population was distributed with 20.6% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 72238, The racial makeup of the county was 66245 White, 4681 Black or African American, 138 American Indian, 459 Asian, 19 Native Hawaiian, and 696 from two or more races.
