Alger County, Michigan


Alger County is one of the 83 county of Michigan, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. Alger County had an official population of 9862 in 2000. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 9438, It is the seventh smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Michigan. Its area is just over 5049.08 sq mi (13077.06 square kilometre), of which, 917.83 square miles (2377.17 square kilometre) of it is land and 4131.25 square miles (10699.89 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the second largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks second in the size of its inland waterways in Michigan.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9862 residents, 3785 households, and 2587 families in the county. The population density was 10.7 people per square mile (4.13/kmē), making it the sixth least densely populated county in Michigan. There were 5964 housing units at an average density of 6.5 per square mile (2.51/kmē). The average household size was 2.35 persons, and the average family size was 2.83 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 20.5% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 116.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 120.6 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 9438, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 8215 White, 589 Black or African American, 357 American Indian, 49 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 224 from two or more races.
