Alexandria City is one of the 135 independent city of Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 128283 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the independent city is 143885, making it the 13th most populous independent city in Virginia. The independent city spans an area of 15.41 mi˛ (39.91 sq km), of which, 15.18 square miles (39.32 sq km) of it is land and 0.23 square miles (0.6 sq km) of it is water, it is the 25th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.


As of the census of 2000, there were 128283 people, 61889 households, and 27749 families residing in the independent city. The population density was 8452 people per square mile (3263.34/km˛), it would be the most densely populated independent city in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 64251 housing units at an average density of 4233.2 per square mile (1634.45/km˛). The average household size was 2.04 persons, and the average family size was 2.87 persons. The population's age distribution was 16.8% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 43.5% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the independent city is 143885, The racial or ethnic makeup of the independent city was 70.3% White, 21.42% Black or African American, 0.36% American Indian, 5.99% Asian, 0.15% Native Hawaiian, and 1.77% from two or more races.
