Alexander County is a United States county located in the United States of North Carolina. Alexander County had an official population of 33603 in 2000. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 36537, It is North Carolina's 65th most populous county. The county comprises an area of 263.14 sq mi (681.53 square kilometre), of which, 260.18 square miles (673.86 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.95 square miles (7.64 square kilometre) of it is water, making it North Carolina's eighth smallest county by total area.

In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.7 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 36537, The racial makeup of the county was 33510 White, 2229 Black or African American, 109 American Indian, 365 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 323 from two or more races.
