Alexander County is one of the 102 county of Illinois, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 9590 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 8152, giving it the 13th smallest population among Illinois's county. It covers total area of 252.54 miē (654.08 kmē), of which, 236.38 square miles (612.22 kmē) of it is land and 16.16 square miles (41.85 kmē) of it is water, it is the seventh smallest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

There were 4591 housing units at an average density of 19.4 per square mile (7.49/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.36 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 25.8% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.1 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 8152, The racial makeup of the county was 63.78% White, 34.19% Black or African American, 0.32% American Indian, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 1.24% from two or more races.
