Alcona County is a county located in Michigan, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Alcona County is home to 11719 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 11556, It is the 11th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Michigan. It covers total area of 1790.54 square miles (4637.48 sq km), of which, 674.43 square miles (1746.77 sq km) of it is land and 1116.1 square miles (2890.69 sq km) of it is water, making it the 15th largest by size in Michigan.

As of the census of 2000, there were 11719 people, 5132 households, and 3568 families living in the county. The population density was 17.4 people per square mile (6.72/kmē), making it the 11th least densely populated county in Michigan. There were 10584 housing units at an average density of 15.7 per square mile (6.06/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.24 persons, and the average family size was 2.67 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 19% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 20.9% from 25 to 44, 31% from 45 to 64, and 24.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 102.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.2 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 11556, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.48% White, 0.58% Black or African American, 0.71% American Indian, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1% from two or more races.
