Alachua County, Florida is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of the county was 217955 as per the 2000 census data. In July 2008, its estimated population was 241364, making it the 23rd most populous county in Florida. It has total area of 969.12 miē (2510.01 kmē), of which, 874.25 square miles (2264.3 kmē) of it is land and 94.88 square miles (245.74 kmē) of it is water, making it the 25th largest by size in Florida.

As of the census of 2000, there were 217955 people in the county, organized into 87509 households, and 47819 families living in the county. The population density was 249.3 people per square mile (96.26/kmē), it is 20th most densely populated county in Florida. There were 95113 housing units at an average density of 108.8 per square mile (42.01/kmē). The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.94. In the county Age distribution was 20.2% under the age of 18, 23.2% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 104.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 107.3 females. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 241364, The racial makeup of the county was 177985 White, 47039 Black or African American, 677 American Indian, 11126 Asian, 80 Native Hawaiian, and 4457 from two or more races.
