The state comprises an area of 52419.02 mi˛ (135764.64 sq km), of which, 50744 square miles (131426.36 sq km) of it is land and 1675.01 square miles (4338.26 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 30th largest by total area among United States.

In the state Age distribution was 25.3% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 29% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 13% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 111.6 females. The median age is 35.8 years, The median age of males was 34.4 years, for females the median age was 37.2 years. The July 2008 population estimate is 4447100, The racial makeup of the state was 71.12% White, 25.99% Black or African American, 0.5% American Indian, 0.7% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, 0.99% from two or more races and 0.65% Other races.
