Aitkin County is a county located in the United States of Minnesota. The population of the county was 15301 as per the 2000 census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 15736, making it Minnesota's 55th largest county. Its area is just over 1995.31 mi˛ (5167.83 square kilometre), of which, 1819.3 square miles (4711.97 square kilometre) of it is land and 176.01 square miles (455.86 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Minnesota's tenth largest county by total area. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Minnesota.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 15301 people, 6644 households, and 4457 families living in the county. The population density was 8.4 people per square mile (3.24/km˛), it is Minnesota's eighth least densely populated county. There were 14168 housing units at an average density of 7.8 per square mile (3.01/km˛). The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.76. In the county Age distribution was 20.9% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 21.6% from 25 to 44, 29.1% from 45 to 64, and 23% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 98.4 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 100.1 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 15736, The racial makeup of the county was 95.84% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 2.69% American Indian, 0.18% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.92% from two or more races.
