In July 2008, its estimated population was 2244, It is North Dakota's 11th least populous county. Its area is just over 988.84 sq mi (2561.08 sq km), of which, 987.91 square miles (2558.68 sq km) of it is land and 0.92 square miles (2.38 sq km) of it is water, it is the 11th smallest in terms of geographical size.

In July 2008, its estimated population was 2244, The racial makeup of the county was 98.35% White, 0.62% Black or African American, 0.4% American Indian, 0.18% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.45% from two or more races.
