According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 4040, making it Iowa's smallest county. Its area is just over 425.41 square miles (1101.81 kmē), of which, 423.54 square miles (1096.96 kmē) of it is land and 1.87 square miles (4.84 kmē) of it is water, makes it the eighth smallest by total area in Iowa.
