Accomack County is a county located in the United States of Virginia. The population of the county was 38305 as per the 2000 census data. The July 2008 population estimate is 38180, It is the 44th most populous county in the U.S. state of Virginia. The county has a total area of 1310.05 miē (3393.01 kmē), of which, 455.24 square miles (1179.07 kmē) of it is land and 854.8 square miles (2213.92 kmē) of it is water, it is the largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 38305 people, 15299 households, and 10387 families living in the county. The population density was 84.1 people per square mile (32.47/kmē), it is the 73rd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 19550 housing units at an average density of 42.9 per square mile (16.56/kmē). The average household size was 2.45 persons, and the average family size was 2.96 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 106.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 111.1 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 38180, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 26460 White, 11040 Black or African American, 151 American Indian, 147 Asian, 45 Native Hawaiian, and 337 from two or more races.
