Abbeville County is one of the 46 county of South Carolina, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 26167 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 25404 in July 2008, making it the 11th least populous county in South Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 511.05 square miles (1323.61 kmē), of which, 508.03 square miles (1315.79 kmē) of it is land and 3.02 square miles (7.82 kmē) of it is water, making it the 13th smallest by size in South Carolina.

The July 2008 population estimate is 25404, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 69.79% White, 29.12% Black or African American, 0.12% American Indian, 0.26% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.68% from two or more races.
